The roles

The Advisory Legal Team has a number of roles for Senior Solicitors and/or Principal Solicitors for permanent and temporary roles for a period of up to 12 months, with the possibility of an extension.

The team

The Advisory Legal team is responsible for supporting APRA in the performance of its functions as a government agency and across the three industries (banking, insurance and superannuation industry) that it is responsible for supervising. The team provides legal advice across various aspects of financial services, corporate and administrative law and prudential regulation. The Advisory Legal team also plays a key role in APRA’s internal governance and for the provision of corporate and commercial legal advice to the organisation. 

Key responsibilities

As a Senior Solicitor or a Principal Solicitor – Advisory Legal, you will support APRA’s internal legal function and your work will include:

  • Delivery of high quality, timely and practical legal advice, on issues arising in industries regulated by APRA (including one or more of banking, superannuation or insurance) or corporate matters, aligned to APRA’s risk appetite;
  • Contribution to law reform proposals and projects within APRA;
  • Jointly formulating strategy with stakeholders in industry aligned supervision teams across APRA on a range of issues that are often novel and untested;
  • Supporting the wider Legal team in engagement with stakeholders; and
  • Working collaboratively within the Advisory Legal team and the wider legal team. 

Key stakeholders will primarily be from one or more of APRA’s frontline supervision divisions and APRA senior executives. You will also have a key role in providing support to other APRA divisions and initiatives involving peer Commonwealth agencies.  

Principal Solicitors will also be responsible for sharing knowledge, mentoring more junior colleagues and contributing to the wider Legal team’s workstreams and knowledge management initiatives.  

About you

You will bring proven legal expertise in corporate or commercial law, or within one or more industries regulated by APRA superannuation, insurance, or banking. Experience in these sectors will be highly regarded.

You hold a current practising certificate and have demonstrated post-admission experience gained in-house, within a regulatory body, or in private practice.

You will enjoy working in collaborative environments and enjoy contributing to a dynamic team culture that values positivity, inclusion, and mutual support.
