The role

The Risk Specialist, Operational Risk & Resilience will play an important role in the regulatory change associated with the new CPS 230 Operational Risk Management standard as well as ongoing supervision of CPS 220 Risk Management.

Apply your non-financial risk experience to solve a range of interesting and challenging matters across Australian financial services, working with a team of dedicated Risk Specialists.  This role will challenge you with no two days being the same and will enable you to leverage your background of operational risk, operations, technology, governance, change management, and/or program management to make a meaningful difference in prudential regulation and supervision.

The team

Cross-Industry Risk Division (CRD) brings together risk and system specialists who collaborate with frontline in supervising entities and play a key role in identifying risks and trends across industries and the financial system as a whole. The branches in CRD are organised into Financial Risk, Non-Financial Risk and System Risk, collaborating and working closely with APRA's frontline supervisors to ensure that our prudential supervision is robust for the safety and stability of Australian Financial Services.

The Non-Financial risk team is responsible for driving excellence across APRA supervision, industry groups and our regulated entities within the banking, superannuation and insurance sectors.  The team serves as subject matter experts and through leaders in CPS 220 Risk Management, CPS 230 Operational Risk Management, CPS 231 Outsourcing, CPS 232 Business Continuity Management, CPS 234 Information Security, CPS 510 Governance, CPS 511 Remuneration, and CPS 520 Fit and Proper (as well as commensurate prudential standards specific to industry).

Key responsibilities

  • Support the development and delivery of a non-financial risk capability program for APRA staff members to uplift understanding and support consistent prudential supervision;
  • Work closely with frontline supervision teams in the oversight of the new standard through Prudential Reviews and Meetings with regulated entities;
  • Act as a subject matter expert on CPS 230 and CPS 220 in support of internal and external questions on the new standard, working with internal teams and external agencies to facilitate a coordinated response and communication to material risk events;
  • Provide contemporary and specialist advice to internal stakeholders and engage with industry stakeholders on operational risk management to share insights and provide clarification of positioning;
  • Lead data analysis, prudential review and prudential engagement of regulated entities to drive improvements in controls and risk outcomes, identifying and championing continuous improvement opportunities for team efficiency and effectiveness;
  • Refine APRAs approach to data analysis for operation risk and supplier management across industry; and
  • Develop insightful observations based on qualitative and quantitative information on NFR for non-specialists, including to our leadership team members for inclusion in public release and media on operational risk management.

About you

This role is ideal for someone with a deep understanding of Non-Financial Risk in areas inclusive of operational risk management, procurement and service provision, governance, risk culture, and/or technology risk, such as operational risk management, data risk management, business continuity management, service provision and/or assurance.  You will need to be able to manage your own workload and priorities effectively, as well as communicate clearly and persuasively with different audiences. You will also need to have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust and rapport with your stakeholders both internally and outside APRA to lead strategic engagement externally and coordinate cross-divisional processes.

Applicants will also ideally have:

  • 10+ years industry experience in Operational Risk in a major financial institution or consulting firm;
  • Excellent analytical, investigation and problem-solving skills;
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the challenges within the Australian financial services industry, and have an interest in international supervisory developments and the legislative environment;
  • Excellent organisational, project management and change management skills;
  • Skills in the capability development, facilitation and coaching of staff members;
  • A willingness to learning and adapting in a dynamic environment, with a supportive and inclusive working style and the ability to work with an interstate and blended team; and 
  • Tertiary qualifications, risk management qualifications/experience in a field relevant to the role are required.

To work with us, you must be an Australian citizen with eligibility to gain a Baseline Security clearance through the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency.
