General Manager, Non-Financial Risk

As General Manager, NonFinancial Risk, you will lead APRA’s NonFinancial Risk (NFR) function and play a critical role in delivering APRA’s mandate to promote the safety and stability of Australia’s financial system. You will translate strategic direction into effective supervision, regulatory and enterprise outcomes across key nonfinancial risk domains.

 

The NFR team is responsible for providing identification, insight and supervision strategies for managing non-financial risks including operational, technology and cyber security risk, as well as governance and risk culture practices, to support effective supervision and regulatory outcomes. The role operates with an enterprise mindset, working closely with supervision, policy and specialist risk teams across APRA.

 

Reporting to an Executive Director, this role forms part of APRA’s senior leadership cohort and offers the opportunity to lead a nationally significant function with systemwide impact.

 

 

Key accountabilities and outcomes 

 

·       Lead and develop highperforming teams, creating an inclusive and accountable environment that builds trust, enables strong performance and supports current and future capability.

·       Set the strategic direction and business plan for the NFR function, aligned to APRA’s Corporate Plan and divisional priorities.

·       Lead the delivery of highquality nonfinancial risk insight and outcomes, applying a ‘one APRA’ mindset to complex regulatory, supervision and policy challenges.

·       Exercise sound judgement in complex and ambiguous situations, managing material risks and issues appropriately and within delegation.

·       Ensure strong technical capability and professional standards across the function, promoting rigour, consistency and continuous improvement.

·       Oversee the efficient and effective operation of the function, including resources, systems, processes and continuous improvement.

·       Build and maintain constructive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and represent APRA in external forums in a manner that supports APRA’s mandate and reputation.

 

 

Desired experience and capabilities 

 

You are a senior leader with experience leading large functions and delivering outcomes in a complex environments. You will bring:

 

·       Demonstrated people leadership capability, including building high‑performing teams and developing future‑focused capability.

·       The ability to lead decisively through complexity and uncertainty, exercising sound judgement and influencing outcomes through clear communication.

·       Significant experience in financial services or a regulated environment, with a strong understanding of prudential regulation and financial system risks.

·       Highly developed analytical, organisational and communication skills, with the ability to distil complex issues for diverse audiences.

·       Effective relationship‑building and influencing capability at senior levels, internally and externally.

·       High personal integrity, executive presence and the courage to challenge constructively in the interests of APRA.

·       Relevant professional qualifications or equivalent experience.
